VW Type 4 Engine Codes

411 / 412, Type 2 Bus (72+), Porsche 914/4 and Porsche 912E — Type 4 horizontally-opposed.

How to read the code
  • Look on the crankcase below the generator/alternator stand — code is one or two letters stamped ahead of the engine serial number.
  • 1700, 1800 and 2000 cc Type 4 crankcases look very similar — the engine code is the only reliable way to tell them apart without measuring.
  • FI codes use Bosch D-Jetronic (early) or L-Jetronic (later); carb codes use twin Solex 34 PDSIT.
  • Porsche 914 and 912E share the Type 4 architecture but have unique cooling shrouds and induction.

Power figures are factory-quoted SAE/DIN bhp at the listed market. Many codes were used across multiple model years and markets — always cross-reference the engine number, serial range and the M-plate before ordering parts.
